It's Funny because it's True

Seriously - 2 is being generous. Hope I entertained you for a second!

Viva la Vida

Nothing gets my attention faster than a song with musical instruments (pianos, violins, full on orchestras). Our radio's spew synthasized garbled sounds accompanied with lyrics like "just like a tattoo, I'll always have you". Don't get me wrong, I don't believe I would be considered a music snob, as my taste in music probably would offend the "Oh, I liked that group before they were on z100" kind. So, my sister sends me an email with a song attached: Viva la Vida by Coldplay. I was intrigued - these email attachments are rare. I download...98...99% Complete! itunes opened and play. BAM - Violins! They were entrancing for quite some time. I really liked the dramatic epicness of the song. Then I decided to listen to the lyrics - which usually makes or breaks the song for me. Please listen:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries Wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It annoys me that Coldplay hasn't given any explination of the lyrics. There of course have been threads posted all over the internet by Coldplay, Religious, enthusiasts as well as the confused. I fall under the confused category. What it comes down to is the roman empire, Jesus Christ and the Crusades. To me, the song is about good intentions fed with too much power which led to corruption.

In short, I like the violins.
